Democrat Scott Colom greeted voters at a Jackson diner and expressed confidence he could pull off a rare Democratic victory in Mississippi's U.S. Senate race. Speaking with patrons at Brent's Drugs in Jackson on Thursday (November 5), Colom argued that voters were responding to his efforts to campaign across the state, including in traditionally Republican areas. "How could you not compete in a state where voting rights are being attacked left and right?" Colom said. "When you show up, people start to believe." The Democrat also criticized tariffs and said Congress should regain greater control over trade policy to help lower costs for consumers. Patrons at Brent's Drugs echoed that optimism. "This race is going to make a difference in our nation. So, it's a very exciting time," said pastor Dennis Grant of Terry, Mississippi. "We looked at that blue wave come through, and it wasn't shocking because the American public as a whole is tired of the government, doing the things that they're doing now," said former Mississippi state Senator Kenneth Wayne Jones. Colom is running against Republican incumbent, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, in a race too tight to call as of Thursday. Hyde-Smith faced backlash during the 2026 Mississippi Senate race after suggesting consumers concerned about high beef prices could "pick another protein." At the Hinds County Election Commission, workers processed affidavit ballots as counting continued. Volunteer Alicia Turner said every ballot mattered in a race that could come down to a narrow margin, while fellow volunteer Romaine Richards said many had been waiting years for a day when the state might "vote the way it should vote, as opposed to the way that people think it's going to vote." — Reuters (Camera: Ed Ou; Production & Editing: Alexandra Sarabia; Writing: Alexandra Sarabia) For more ABS-CBN News videos, click the link below: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTd1FPrtfZr8 For more Breaking News & Live Coverage videos,...
